Lent: Stations of the Cross Art Gallary

Welcome To Redemption City Church

As we celebrate Lent, the 40 day season of preparation and repentance (during which we anticipate the death of Jesus on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter), our desire is for the gospel to make its way into our lives in a deeper way, where we can grasp the significance of the crucifixion and the resurrection.  This 40 day season is filled with fasting, praying, scripture reading, meditation and reflection on the gospel.

For this season we have set up an art Gallery created by a Christian artist, Scott Erikson from Austin (Instagram: @ScottThePainter).  The Stations of the Cross began as a remembrance that people used to retrace Jesus’ final steps in Jerusalem up to the hill where He was crucified.

Wanting to share that practice and experience with people who couldn’t make the trip to Jerusalem, they created local stations of meditation that became in itself a tradition. You can find this tradition on the inside of many churches still today.  Through the depictions of the 12 Stations of the Cross we see Jesus, being truly God, identifying with us in his humanity. Jesus experienced temptation, betrayal, injustice, physical pain, humiliation, broken relationships, and even death.

Many of us feel the weight of anxiety and fear as we journey through the current world. During this season of Lent, we as a community will look to the life and teachings of Jesus. We will have the opportunity to reflect on who He is as the sinless Son of God who died for us, and rose from the grave, overcoming sin.  Jesus meets our greatest need by making a way for us to be reconciled to the God of the Universe. This is what Jesus achieved on the Cross.

These stations represented here on the walls are a cross-section of elements, ideas, and objects from Jesus’ journey of being with us. As you work through these stations, may you see that we are not troubled guests in this world… that we are not forgotten… and that the good news of this season was expressed best by Jesus when he said, “In this world you’ll experience many trials. But take heart, for I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Thank you so much for joining us for the season of Lent.  Enjoy the Gallery by reading the meditation prompts at each Station and the passages of Scripture that correlate with each Station, take time to pray, to worship, whatever the Spirit leads as you traverse from Stations 1 to 12. We are praying for you during this Lent Season.
